Back-To-School Etiquette
Tips for a more mannerly start to the school year
As students head back to class, it's not just about school supplies and schedules—it's also a great time for a refresher on respectful behavior. As founder of Mannerly (an etiquette school and lifestyle brand) and parent of three young children, I am delighted to share my top back-to-school etiquette reminders for families.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL ETIQUETTE: TIPS FOR A KINDER START TO THE YEAR
1. Introduce Yourself—and Others
It’s not just polite, it’s inclusive. Practice saying their teacher’s name(s) and inviting new friends into conversation before the first bell rings. Rehearsing strong introductions before school begins can help boosts confidence and prepare children for meeting new friends.
2. Notice and Include New Students
Teach your child to look out for anyone sitting alone or feeling left out. Something as simple as saying, “You can sit with us,” can change someone’s day.
3. Respect Shared Spaces
Whether it’s the classroom library, the cafeteria, or the soccer field—we want to leave every shared space better than you found it. It’s a simple act of courtesy that builds community and can be taught early.
4. Practice Verbal Gratitude Daily
Encourage kids to thank their teachers, bus drivers, lunch staff, and coaches. A genuine "thank you" shows respect and appreciation. We love to teach the habit of gratitude through our classes.
5. Send Written Notes of Gratitude
A handwritten note to a teacher or staff member goes a long way. It’s thoughtful, personal, and a wonderful habit to build. And there is an amazing way how handwritten notes reach someone at just the right moment.
6. Mind Your Language
Words are powerful tools. Before speaking, encourage these questions: Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary? This kind of social filter can go a long way in building and maintaining friendships.
8. Practice Active Listening
Listening is just as important as speaking. Eye contact, patience, and staying present show mutual respect.
9. Freely Share Real Compliments
Notice the good in others and name it out loud. Let’s compliment more than just the color of someone’s shirt – but reflect on their character and what makes them unique.
